I’ve been thinking about life a lot lately and I’ve decided to take a break from the photography business in 2010. I am finding that caring for a pre-schooler and special needs baby takes a tremendous amount of time. And I can’t seem to successfully balance my business and family life. Heck, I can’t even clean the house!
So rather than stress over trying to get things done and retain a professional appearance, I’m taking time off. I will reflect on how I want the business to proceed, but also I need some time to do creative assignments and just hangout and take care of my family. So I’m hoping to still post to the blog periodically. Don’t hold your breath, but I am hoping I can.
In the meantime, feel free to contact me if you are interested in prints or cards. Or just drop me a line!
Ok- it has been a while because our new little one is now 4 months old! It’s been a world-wind of emotions ever since Gia arrived. She spent the first 6 weeks of her life at Community Medical Center in either the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or the Pediatric Unit. At the hospital, it was determined that she has a rare genetic abnormality (9q34 Duplication). It was a random mutation, a 1 in 100,000 or more chance of occurring. That means she is quite unique and most certainly the only one in Missoula, and as far as I know the only one of 2 in the country!
At this time she is home and doing well. She is almost double her birth weight, but she still has some issues related to feeding and other health problems. We are dealing with her condition on a day-to-day basis and we are quite hopeful that things will turn around for the better. She is already smiling and giggling which I take to be a fantastic sign.
However, it take a fair amount of time to care for her and a 3.5 year old. While I am still interested in photography I will not be putting much effort into my business for a while. That being said, I am still available for a very limited amount of appointments. I may not return emails or calls as quickily as I should, but be assured that you will still receive high quality images and prints. I will just be doing less photo sessions.

It is always sad to say goodbye. Jerry was my Mom’s cat, a real “mama’s boy.” He was born in State Collage, PA just a a few months before my graduation from Penn State. His mommy was rescued from a frat house by a friend of a friend. So these two little black, blue-eyed kittens: Jerry and his brother, Ben (yes- named after the ice cream- can you tell my favorite dessert?) went to live with my mom, who happened to have an opening at her house. Jerry slept on Mom’s head that first night together and his favorite spot at night was always with his arm around Mom.
One of my fondest memories of him was the day the he finally got up the courage to confront my dog, Mattie, who loved to chase him. Jerry turned around and just started chasing her! Unfortunately, Jerry wasn’t the smartest cat on the block and decided to corner her up the stairs (which had a baby gate at the other end). Jerry, as a last ditch attempt, somehow made his long hair stand straight up! I’ve never seen anything like that in person (in cartoons, yes, but who believes them?). It was just amazing.
He was a sweet cat who will be very missed. RIP Jerry.
Well…. it’s that time again. Finding it harder to get up from the ground and the tummy is in the way. We have less than a month now for the arrival of the new little one, so I’ve decided to stop scheduling sessions for now. I will be available for limited sessions starting late August through October.
In the meantime custom pop art, greeting cards, and art prints are available. Feel free to contact me with questions (photos AT dariaphotography DOT com). Have a great summer!
This colorful 20X20 inch pop-art canvas print is fondly titled “Dixie Head.” It is 1.5 inches deep and requires no frame. This canvas contains NO optical brightening agents, which can cause the canvas to break down or lose color over time. The back is covered in acid-free Tyvek, and hardware is include so it is ready to hang right on your wall!
The canvas print is $275. Email me if you are interested and I can look up exact shipping information. I suspect it will be about $25. If you live in the Missoula area we can arrange for a pick up too.
Yes indeed- it is VERY late. In fact- I think I skipped a few first fridays! So much for keeping up with this blog! Lately- this pregnant lady has just had a wild time keeping up with a toddler! Everything else has been put on the back burner….
So- here’s my photo. This was taken on Maria Island, a small island off the east coast of Tasmania. It has a very diverse history. Like most islands off the coast of Australia (or so it seems), there was a small penal colony at some point. The island also had a small population over the years, surviving by either mining for natural rocks (like sandstone or bluestone) or going through pastoral periods. Currently it is wildlife sanctuary and National Park. I visited in 2001 and was lucky enough to spend a few days to camp and explore. This is one of my favorite photos (a slide scan- yikes!) of one of the old farm houses. Although you can’t see it it in the photo, the house very near sandstone cliffs overlooking the ocean. For more information on Maria Island check out this link: http://www.mariaislandferry.com.au/Maria_Island_Facts_&_History.html
Like all my art photos, this is for sale. Please contact me if you are interested!
It’s just been so dreary and cold lately that I just felt like a little bit of color. Taken last summer, when it was really hot (hard to imagine now!).
I’m going through some photos I took last year and found these two great ones. They were taken at Linvilla Orchards in Media, Pennsylvania. I grew up about 10 mins from this ‘farm’ and we would often go there as kids, especially in the fall when they had a pumpkin patch and hayrides. They have awesome, yummy pies in their bakery too! I thought my little one would love it so we made a trip on our last visit (she did love it btw). Things have changed quite a bit since I had last been there. They had a really cool old barn than had sadly burned down, but they added a lot more animals to see and they had a pretty cool playground too! They do have some wild looking chickens!
I thought I’d try something new this new year and share some of my favorite fine art that I’ve taken over the years. I’ll add them every first Friday of the month, so you Missoula folks can see a little art before the Downtown First Friday Art Walk.
Most of my fine art work is available for sale in different sizes. Please contact me if you are interested.
So here is my first photo. It was taken at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia. I altered it a bit (desaturated and added grain) in Photoshop to give it more of an ‘old world’ feel. I really like the way it turned out as it really reminds me of Italy (which I suppose is a little strange since I’ve never been before!). Hope you have a great year!
